I participated in the project Col cuore sulle labbra. The show, presented in Italian with live music, featured the projection of some of my illustrations throughout the narrative. It is a journey through the history of Italy’s resistance, interweaving literature, dance, illustration, and music. The narrating voice of Fernanda Pivano recounts her role in translating Spoon River Anthology into Italian during the Fascist era in Italy—and the subsequent repression she endured when the SS discovered that the book “spoke of love, of peace, against war, against capitalism, and against all the conventional.”
Col cuore sulle labbra focuses on themes such as repression, resistance, the importance of culture, and the power of literature—issues that transcend the past by reigniting memories of Italy’s post-war years.
The music of Fabrizio De André, drawn from the concept album Non al denaro, non all’amore, né al cielo, was rearranged for the occasion, punctuating the narrative and merging with word and image in a hybrid expressive form.
The idea behind the project originated from my specialist thesis in editorial graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, completed a few years earlier. The text and direction are by the pedagogue and theatrical director Davide Di Palo.
