Meereskreaturen – 48 Stunden Neukölln Festival

Quartiermanagement Gahnhoferstr. 12043

June 26-28, 2015

In 2015, I participated in the 48 Stunden Neukölln festival, the annual contemporary art festival in the Neukölln district of Berlin.

During the event, I curated an exhibition and organised creative workshops for children on the theme of the sea.

“One day you’re in the sea, the next day you swim in a bathtub.”

All of the illustrations were created in a traditional manner, using only coloured pencils on paper.

The illustration The Fish in The Bathtub was inspired by a song from the Italian singer-songwriter Giovanni Truppi, titled “Il mondo è come te lo metti in testa” (The world is as you put it in your head). In one verse, he sings: “One day you’re in the sea, the next day you swim in a bathtub.”

The image made me reflect on the prison often self-imposed by the way we see things. We are often unable to realise that there is the sea outside the window, but we prefer to bask in a small, safe, and narrow bathtub.

This illustration was created on an A3 sheet with coloured pencils on paper and was chosen as the back cover of the official map for the youth section of the 48 Stunden Festival.

Discovering the hidden narratives in everyday objects: how the world around us reflects the unspoken stories of who we truly are
